What makes combined heat and power units so special is that they generate both heat and electricity in one. This electricity is more environmentally friendly and, because it comes directly from your own boiler room, there are no long electricity transport routes.
Außerdem arbeitet ein BHKW wesentlich effizienter als ein Elektrizitätswerk und erreicht einen Gesamtwirkungsgrad von 90 %. In den meisten Elektrizitätswerken entsteht bei der Stromerzeugung Wärme, die ungenutzt vernichtet wird. Ein BHKW hingegen nutzt die entstehende Abwärme der Stromerzeugung zum Heizen. Dadurch kann es die Energiekosten um bis zu 40 % senken.

Renewable energies from the sun and wind only produce energy when the weather plays along. This is in complete contrast to a CHP unit, which produces heat and electricity continuously, regardless of whether the sun is shining or not.
Blockheizkraftwerke gibt es in verschiedenen Leistungsklassen - von der Versorgung eines Schwimmbads bis zu großen Industrieparks ist alles möglich. Neben der Bereitstellung von Raumwärme, kann ein BHKW auch Wasserdampf und Heißluft erzeugen sowie zum Kühlen eingesetzt werden.
Technology of the future tried and tested
The government has also recognised the future potential of combined heat and power (CHP) units, or cogeneration units. It has stipulated that a quarter of the electricity produced in Germany should come from CHP units.
Die verbaute Technik eines BHKW ist bereits lang bekannt: es besteht aus einem Antrieb, meist ein Verbrennungsmotor, der mit einem Generator gekoppelt ist. Zukünftig könnten aber auch Brennstoffzellen auf Wasserstoff- oder Erdgasbasis eine große Rolle als Antrieb spielen.
